Do Your Child's Feet Hurt?

Have your child's feet been examined lately? Healthy feet are happy feet. If your child is complaining of foot pain, it may be a sign of underlying problems.

Why Some People Get Blisters More Easily

Blisters form when friction, heat, or moisture causes the upper layers of skin to separate, filling the space with fluid. Some people are more prone to blisters due to skin sensitivity, foot shape, or certain medical conditions that make skin fragile. Wearing shoes that rub, fit poorly, or trap sweat increases the risk, as does going sockless or wearing socks that do not wick moisture. High-impact or repetitive activities, such as running or hiking, can also trigger blisters, especially in warm or damp conditions. Prevention often starts with well-fitted shoes, moisture-wicking socks, and protective padding in friction-prone areas. Applying lubricants or blister prevention patches before activity can help as well. If blisters keep forming or become painful, it is suggested that you see a chiropodist for a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Blisters can usually be treated at home, however, if you have recurring blisters or experience significant discomfort or pain, please consult with one of the chiropodists from Complete Family Footcare & Therapy. Our clinicians will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

What Is a Blister?

A blister is a small pocket of fluid in the upper skin layers and is one of the body’s natural responses to injury or pressure. Blisters can also result from burns, fungal or viral skin infections, and the feet are particularly prone due to ill-fitting footwear and friction. Friction on the skin causes the upper layer of skin to separate from the lower layers. The space that this separation creates then becomes filled with a liquid called serum, which protects the lower layers of skin.

Treatment

If you notice a blister on your foot, you can cover it with a soft bandage or dressing to protect it. Popping the blister is discouraged. Doing so exposes the raw skin underneath it to bacteria and also raises the risk of infection. If a blister pops naturally, let it drain before covering it with a bandage. Blisters usually heal on their own or with home treatment, however, if your blister is recurring, very painful, or appears infected, it is recommended that you see a chiropodist for treatment.

Prevention

You can help to prevent blisters by wearing comfortable, well-fitted shoes. Keep your feet dry by wearing moisture-wicking socks and dust your feet with talcum powder if they tend to get sweaty. If you have areas on your feet that are more susceptible to blisters, you might be able to prevent the blister from forming by covering it with a pad.

Lateral Ankle Sprains and Chronic Ankle Instability

A lateral ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments on the outside of the ankle are stretched or torn, often from twisting the foot inward. Repeated sprains can lead to chronic ankle instability, a condition where the ankle frequently gives way during walking or activity. Risk factors include previous ankle injuries, weak supporting muscles, poor balance, and wearing unsupportive footwear. These conditions can cause ongoing pain, swelling, and difficulty with mobility. A chiropodist can help by assessing the injury, recommending bracing or supportive footwear, providing rehabilitation exercises, and guiding injury prevention strategies. If you have frequent ankle sprains or persistent ankle weakness, it is suggested that you consult a chiropodist who can offer effective relief and treatment solutions.

When one or more ligaments in the ankle overstretch or tear due to injury, an ankle sprain occurs. If you would like to learn more about ankle sprains, please consult with one of the chiropodists from Complete Family Footcare & Therapy. Our clinicians can help you maintain the health of your lower limbs and your mobility.

Symptoms of an ankle sprain vary depending on the severity of the injury, but may include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness
  • Difficulty walking
  • Ankle instability
  • A reduced range of motion in the ankle

Treatments for an ankle sprain may consist of:

  • Resting the injured ankle
  • Applying ice
  • Elevating the ankle
  • Compressing the ankle
  • Over-the-counter pain medications
  • Ankle braces or other devices to take weight off of the ankle
  • Ankle exercises
  • Surgery (in rare cases)

It’s important for the sprained ankle to heal correctly and fully in order to avoid repeated injury. If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in North York and Mississauga, ON

Fall Prevention Tips for Children and Teenagers

Preventing falls in children and teenagers begins with creating a safe environment. Use safety gates to block off stairs and ensure crib sides are always securely raised for infants. Keep stairways clear of clutter to reduce tripping hazards and make sure windows, especially on the first floor, remain locked to prevent accidental falls. As children grow, proper footwear and foot health become important in maintaining balance and coordination. A chiropodist can assess foot structure, recommend supportive shoes, and address any concerns that may affect stability or movement. If your child has endured a foot or ankle injury from falling, it is suggested that you schedule a visit with a chiropodist who can treat various foot conditions, and provide guidance on additional fall prevention techniques.

Falls are a major cause of injury among the elderly. To learn more about preventing falls or to get treatment following a foot or ankle injury caused by a fall, please consult with one of the chiropodists from Complete Family Footcare & Therapy. Our clinicians will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Falling is one of the leading causes of injury among the elderly. It is said that about 50% of falls that result in hospitalization occur in the home. Fortunately, there are steps that you can implement to reduce your risk of falling in the home.

Tips to Prevent Falls at Home:

  • In the bathroom - Place non-slip mats in the shower or tub, install grab bars near the toilet and bath, and wipe up any moisture or spills as soon as possible.
  • In the living rooms and bedroom - Remove loose wires, cords, or other objects that may be an obstacle to moving around safely. Make sure that you have good lighting throughout the home so that you can always see where you are going. Get rid of any rugs or mats that are not firmly anchored or that may cause you to trip. When walking around the home, move slowly.
  • In the kitchen - Store food and supplies in easily accessible areas, store heavy items in lower cupboards, and wipe up any spills immediately to prevent slipping.
  • On the stairs - Make sure that the stairs are well-lit and have secure handrails. Walk slowly when ascending or descending the stairs.
  • Outside - Keep walkways well-lit and clear of snow, ice, leaves, and man-made tripping hazards.

Maintaining your overall health, including the health of your feet, can also help to prevent falls. Eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and wear well-fitted, comfortable, and supportive shoes. If you have a mobility device, such as a cane, use it while walking.

Finding Relief From Foot Arthritis and Pain

Many people struggle with foot arthritis, which can make walking uncomfortable and daily activities harder. There are different types of arthritis that affect the foot, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. These conditions often lead to stiff joints, swelling, and pain in the feet and ankles. One helpful way to manage this pain without surgery is through the use of custom foot orthotics and supportive shoes. These tools help the foot move in a healthier way by changing how the muscles work and how weight is spread during walking. This can take pressure off painful joints and improve comfort. If you have ongoing foot pain or have been diagnosed with arthritis, it is suggested that you see a chiropodist who can recommend footwear solutions that are designed just for your needs.

Osteoarthritis in the feet or ankles can be a painful and disabling condition that may interfere with your daily activities. If you have arthritis, please consult with one of the chiropodists from Complete Family Footcare & Therapy. Our clinicians will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

What Is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a condition in which the protective layer of cartilage in the joints breaks down over time. This loss of cartilage causes the bones to rub together during movement, leading to pain and inflammation. Osteoarthritis is associated with aging, and often affects the small joints of the feet and ankles.

Symptoms

Symptoms of osteoarthritis include:

  • Joint pain
  • Joint stiffness
  • Swelling in or around the joint
  • Restricted range of motion
  • Difficulty walking

Diagnosis

Osteoarthritis can be diagnosed through physical examination. You may also need to have an X-ray taken to assess the extent of the damage caused by arthritis.

Treatment

Treatment for osteoarthritis focuses on reducing symptoms and improving the function of the affected joints. Conservative treatments include oral pain medications, orthotic devices, bracing or immobilizing the affected foot or ankle, steroid injections into the affected joint to reduce inflammation, and physical therapy. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary.
